The Visual Standard

Define the standard before you evaluate the work.

Before evaluating whether an image looks artificial, you must first define what realism looks like. The Visual Standard establishes the boundaries that protect credibility when AI tools are used in visual work. Without a defined standard, small adjustments in contrast, saturation, lighting, and sharpening can accumulate and gradually push images beyond what feels believable.

1 — Realism Bar

Choose Your Realism Bar

Select one realism category for your work. Do not mix realism levels.

If your realism shifts, trust shifts with it.

2 — Lighting Logic

Define Your Lighting Logic

How does light behave in your visual world?

Describe light behavior...

Behavior under different conditions...

• Soft window light

• Overcast daylight

• Neutral studio side-light

• Flat graphic tone

Lighting consistency is one of the strongest signals of realism.

3 — Polish Ceiling

Define Your Polish Ceiling

Complete the sentence.

My images should feel

(natural, calm, editorial, documentary, restrained; over-polished, hyper-sharp, dramatic, glossy, AI-styled)

[input 1]

Not

[input 2]

At what point does “improved” become artificial?

Consistency lives at the ceiling, not the maximum.

4 — Emotional Temperature

Define Your Emotional Temperature

My work should feel

Never:

Avoided tones...

Emotional tone should remain consistent across visuals.

5 — Credibility Guardrails

Define Your Credibility Guardrails

What visual signals are not allowed in your work?

Examples: excessive contrast, heavy sharpening, glowing highlights, dramatic HDR, artificial textures, unrealistic lighting.

•

First restricted signal

•

Second restricted signal

•

Third restricted signal

If you have to push to impress, it doesn’t belong.

Create Your Visual Standard

A defined visual standard protects credibility by establishing boundaries before editing begins. When creators define their realism bar, lighting logic, polish ceiling, emotional tone, and credibility guardrails, visual drift becomes easier to detect and prevent.
